Petty Thief or Derivative Artist?

Patrick Cariou's 'Yes Rasta' photo & Richard Prince's derivation

I believe artists should pay royalties in these instances, when they’re piggybacking on another artist’s creation(s) – like when you sample or use another artist’s work in the music community.

Someone needs to defend visual artists’ rights, as the music labels do, ensuring everyone gets paid.

Lichtenstein is another offender, profiting wildly on the backs of comic book artists, who were not as handsomely compensated.

2PACALYPSE NOW

As referenced on Howard Stern, this op/ed NY Times article by Russell Potter raises an interesting point. Yeah, 2pac was strikingly similar to the real thing, but scripted. This is Dr. Dre’s incarnation, not Tupac Shakur himself. Part of Pac’s fame came from his spontaneity, thug life was real to him. There was no chance of something wild breaking out with ghosty-Pac, as it undoubtedly woulda with IRL-Pac.

The man makes a good point, but I’d still love to see him “live” (?) in the only way available now. I think the public could enjoy & companies could profit from sponsoring events with dead celebrities live. Add photo ops as added incentives.

Hell, you could do photo ops with IRL celebrities brands sponsor, so they don’t hafta suffer through meet and greets & fans get images to post on facebook / instagram, tumblr, twitter, wordpress blogs, spreading their word virally. Run with it, Dr. Dre‘s shown you the way, let’s go!

Can’t help but be reminded of Dave Chappelle’s skit featuring Tupac and his ongoing new releases from beyond the grave… “I wrote this song in ’94!”

HOLOGRAPHIC 2PAC x DR DRE-ENSTEIN = THUG LIFE 4EVER

2pac Digital Domain Resurrection

Tupac Shakur has officially achieved immortality, life after death. THANK YOU, DR. DRE-enstein for bringing 2pac back to life! I mean that. Gave me chills. Reportedly, this is all new footage, created anew based on his mannerisms and vocals. They nailed it.

It looked like he was there, LIVE!!! No uncanny valley distraction whatsoever. The only glitch at this point is a slight drift/moonwalking effect when the figure is standing still.

Naturally, I’m fascinated by what’s behind the curtain – how they resurrected him… The resurrection involved digital wizardry, curved glass below sightline, a mylar screen and a technology from 1862 known as “Pepper’s Ghost

The Best Tupac Hologram Articles & Propaganda:

The last article brings up the ethics of holographic life after death. It seems like one can only prevent whatever scenario they imagine AND specifically address this in their will. They’re at the mercy of their loved one, whoever legally controls their likeness rights after death. I think Tupac’s mom, Afeni Shakur, did right by her son in this example. Amazing!

Let it be known, I would prefer to believe Pac’s still alive (a la that Dave Chappelle skit), kicking it on an island somewhere, with Biggie, Peter Steele (and other celebrities I would prefer undead) without the scrutiny & scandal that accompanies fame.

Think Surreally

WWDT? (What Would Dali Think?)A fascinating article on Salvador Dali’s Creative Thinking Techniques, describes how you can attain similarly artistically.

Dali would intentionally go to sleep sitting with a spoon poised in his hand above a tin plate, so that he would drop the spoon on falling asleep & be awoken by the clatter to document those unreal fleeting thoughts one encounters en route to falling asleep.

Said article outlines methodology, to grasp & hang onto these fleeting, disjointed, free-flow, stream-of-consciousness thoughts. Definitely recommended reading.

Skyrim High Elf Thug Life

dark elf Jenassa in hornsHigh Elf in Devil Horns

I’ve been nerding out on Skyrim lately. The chickies I run with always don the horns, as a matter of protocol. Nightmare girls unite, throw up your horns! ;)

Chopping enemies down like a barbarian thug when my <3 informs me high elves are typically more magic-centric… Not this elf! Swinging those two-handed weapons like a savage, no time for casting spells! Answer unclear, axe again! *swinging*

Use throne, like a boss!

Like a boss!
